Before To forming Toto its members worked as session musicians for Steely Dan[3] Seals and Crofts[4and Crofts[4] Boz Skaggs and Sonny and Cher. Guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's lead singer.
About Toto
Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour made them a household brand across the globe.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to a different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

After Isolation Toto was released, the band went on a hiatus. The band members of the group the opportunity to pursue their own projects. In 1996, the group reformed to tour and release an album. It was the first time that all original members were on stage together for more than a decade.
The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members appeared on stage at once. After that, the group broke up again. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time all the original Toto members appeared performing together for over 31 years. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto has been one of the most adored rock groups for more than three decades, having scored megahits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X platinum smash, "Africa." Despite their popularity, the band faced several difficulties in their later years. In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him, but the band wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a string of lineup changes and a string of disappointing albums led Toto to call it quits for a few years. The group returned to the road in 2012 after the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album marked a return to form for the band and the tour was accompanied it with sold-out shows across North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
Toto's music remains as relevant as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, getting new fans with each new generation. Their success has made them a long-lasting presence in pop culture and their live shows are always packed with energy and excitement.
